ZINC IS ATTRACTIVE

Zinc used in construction engineering and architecture is both natural and beautiful. As a modern building material, zinc opens up numerous attractive options for architects, craftsmen and owners of residential buildings.

Due to its special processing qualities, zinc can be used almost anywhere. Zinc provides strong visual effects in all kinds of places: from roof accessories such as dormer, vergeboard or fireplace panellings to the simple elegance of modern roof and front designing, including roof drainage systems.

A firmly adhesive protective layer of zinc oxide and basic zinc carbonate (CO2) is formed on the blank rolled surface of zinc sheet. Due to the formation of this protective layer, its silvery bright look changes to grey patina which is subsequently transformed into a homogeneous surface. This highly solid layer which can even regenerate itself in case of damage provides long-term protection against weather conditions.

The time required for the patina to develop depends on various factors such as the positioning or the lack of protective coating from moisture or condensation. As a result, the surface layer changes from an initially matt grey into the regular blue-grey patina.

There is no telling exactly how long this process takes, as a lot of different factors are involved. It may even take a number of years in the case of upright positioning or if there’s insufficient exposure to rains.

No more waiting for beauty
If there are pre-weathered surfaces, certain shades or hues, which normally take years to develop, can be produced at once without loss of protective qualities. This is a compelling argument for new buildings and especially for renovated houses as the “new zinc“ blends in with the overall picture right from the beginning.

CURRENT INFORMATION
ZINKNEWS 05/2007
Zinc plays a crucial role in modern architecture. Regardless of whether it is used for esthetic reasons, or for corrosion protection or simply as an environmentally sound construction material – zinc is becoming increasingly important in our modern world. In addition, its natural patina provides a kind of self-healing protection that lasts a lifetime. Zinc – Pure Life is an information service provided by INITIATIVE ZINK, the German zinc association.
