ZINC IS INNOVATIVE

The qualities of zinc are often greatly underestimated - although zinc is a synonym for innovation, especially in the automotive area.

Using zinc scum, you can achieve high stability while at the same time significantly reducing weight. For instance, zinc scum is used for manufacturing compound bodies such as crash absorbers, vibration dampers or frames and carriage parts in lightweight construction.

Using zinc as a soldering material leads to further advantages in automotive engineering. A number of problems are created when conventional soldering techniques are applied. Constructional elements are warped and corrosion protection is destroyed by high temperatures. Newly developed soldering substances based on zinc with aluminium portions of up to 15 per cent have a significantly lower melting point, which is below 400°C (depending on the alloy used). As a result, these innovative zinc products ensure a warp-free joining of thin sheets and thus create new ways construction possibilities as well as optimized applications in the area of lightweight construction.

The latest stroke of genius are so-called head displays used to project coloured pictures on to the windscreen and thus into a driver’s direct field of vision. This is made possible by the use of zinc oxide, the small nano particles which are not only completely translucent but also conduct electricity faster than other substances in conventional displays.

Lightweight construction: Zinc scums combine the advantages of high stability and low weight.

Last but not least, the energy required to produce and recycle zinc has been reduced by the use of innovative measures. As a result, the so-called Efficiency Rate, i.e. the proportion of the zinc available for recycling relative to the total quantity of zinc, is relatively high.

Using zinc coatings as a corrosion preventive in automotive engineering has been common practice for years. Whereas 25 years ago a car’s life span was limited by rust perforation, nowadays this is no longer a problem. Instead, today’s car manufacturers assure potential buyers that their cars will last more than twenty years. It is, however, innovative that with a view to saving weight, new zinc coating techniques have been developed in automotive engineering, which minimize the thickness of the applied zinc layers.

CURRENT INFORMATION
ZINKNEWS 05/2007
Zinc is a special element employed in automotive engineering. Safety-belt components, hood ornaments, door handles, toggle switches or levers, hot-dip galvanized chassis as well as visual and design components in car interiors often consist of zinc gained from the diecasting process.
