ZINC PROTECTS

It is a well-known fact that zinc protects steel and iron against corrosion and rust. Due to its excellent physical qualities, zinc is also used wherever stability and safety are important, such as in seat-belt cylinders, airbag modules, or door lock casings. Even in modern architecture it is zinc that provides enduring protection for both steel constructions and buildings. It’s the natural patina that does it. And you don’t have to wait for years for the patina to develop, you can get it right from the start. So-called pre-weathered surfaces, available with various visual effects, provide a kind of self-healing, ensuring that damaged areas gradually heal themselves.
However, zinc also protects human beings, immediately and directly, and helps us improve the quality of our lives.

As a trace element, zinc plays a crucial role in all human cell functions. For example, it is vital for the functioning of more than 300 enzymes. Also, it is a contributing factor in stabilizing the human DNA, in building up genes, and in transferring nerve signals.
Zinc is involved in wound healing and skin regeneration. As an ingredient of care products, for example as zinc oxide in suntan lotions, it provides protection against harmful ultraviolet radiation. In ointments, powders, and cosmetic products zinc supports natural skin processes.

Protecting baby bottoms
“A baby’s skin is five times thinner than an adult’s“, says Hans Merk, professor at a German skin clinic. „This is why it becomes dry and fissures rather quickly.“ Also, baby skin’s defenses are weak: its protective flora has yet to develop, its fat content and pH-value are rudimentary. “As a result, a baby’s skin is more vulnerable to bacteria and fungi“, the dermatologist explains.
To prevent this, many parents use protective creams. However, quite often they’re not sure whether regular care is good for the baby or whether frequent use of creams causes the skin to become even more sensitive. Merk recommends applying a thin layer of special protection cream after washing in order to prevent the baby’s skin from becoming sore and irritated. It is crucial that the natural barrier of the baby’s skin remains intact. Zinc oxide causes skin swellings to recede and assists wound healing. Source: Der Dermatologe, June 2005.
